Lezhin’s blog is one of the most famous ‘minor’ blog between bloggers in Korea.

As I mentioned while presenting his blog, he is not a type of nice child, who posts classical

poems, review on masterpieces and intellectually discuss the society with difficult terms.

He represents the ordinary 20s and 30s, and even overall perfectly ordinary males who love

soccer, game, sex and so on.

He’s been the hottest problematic blog star.

Managers of the portal egloos.com were trying to stop him

but he had been protecting by mass males.

 

I’ll continue.

My view on journalism

What is journalism?

Journalism enables to interconnect people and societies through sharing information in common.

Journalism should be neutral in any case and should be based on truth only, as they have considerable influence on people’s thought.

Journalists are the intermedites who are responsible for the information he’s professionally bringing.

They are more eltes from mass, but not elites from elites. (or for)

Our dependence on journalism is more than we can imagine. We are mass and we don’t find out every new things by ourselves and we just can’t or we’re not trained to, in a certain way.

Journalists, in that sense, have full influence on us and we simply rely on them, when we don’t reach to something by ourselves

Journalism is important but real journalism is what we should consider

 

[Post review] Conversation with the President

 

I found this interesting post on www.egloos.com, which is very similar with www.wordpress.com. Egloos provides the same service, but everything is in Korean. I enjoy visiting there and this one is one of the most recent post I read there.

It seems that recently there was a one-time special conversation programme on TV. The aim of the programme was to give nation to have a chance to talk to the president Lee Myung Bak. Some pretty ordinary people were chosen for this chance and the owner of the blog scrapped from one portal site (http://agora.daum.net) a review of being a member of this conversation. Additionally the owner of the blog added his opinion on that, too.

She explains that she had hardly any chance to ask the question she wanted to ask to president according to recent issues in Korea. Whatever she/others asked anything, the president was answering something totally different. She added that the broadcasters even controlled the questions before the conversation.

She was very upset that the president even doesn’t try to listen to the nation’s heart. They have many problems that are directly connected with their lives, but the conversation lost its original meaning and became a part of his dictatorship.

The owner of the blog (follow the link) agrees with her that this was not a conversation but like his presentation, justification of his behaviors so far. He watched this through TV and he was really irritated, too.

Korea: A celeb death 08.09.08

 

A famous entertainer in Korea Ahn Jae Hwan killed himself by inhaling gas in his own car.

The woman in the photo is the wife, which is very popular entertainer too.

 

The couple used to be loved very much by the public.

When they got married a year ago, really a lot of people celebrated them and wished the best,

as they had been good friends in the entertainment world for a long time.

Many people were very upset to hear this news.

I was websurfing in the morning and realized about this tragedy.

 

The reason for his death is explained to be financial obligation of 4.000.000.000 won (4 million dollars)

which got multiplied by ? which was taken from private moneyland companies.

Besides the tragedy itself, Korean netizens are feeling shame and sorry, they think they have part of things to be blamed for recent issue about them when his wife Jung Sun Hee commented about the whole national candlelight assembly against ‘import of ‘mad-cow-disease’ beef from U.S.A’ in Korea.

(I hope I’ll have a chance to explain this candlelight assembly later via post…)

 

It was about 2 months ago, when FTA between Korea and America was about to settled.

There has been acute disscusion on FTA between pros and cons for a long time in Korea.

However, the matter of import of beef that is ‘ MADE IN U.S.A. ‘, which  was decided by new government (President Lee Myung Bak, 2008~), the object of standing against only,

as many of the nation felt the issue as a matter of dead/alive according to so called ‘mad cow disease’ infection.

(I’m not sure if it’s scientifically established theory, but there was a saying that 95% of all Koreans’ gene has got a character that is EXTREMELY vulnerable to mad cow disease cell (hmm… I read that mad cow disease is not a virus as it’s a protein), while only about 30% of Americans were  so. And that might have played its role, too, to move people to the street with candle as a sign that he/she is standing against it in peaceful way.)

The national atmosphere was very hot. Government constantly tried to make excuses. It seemed to be a little civil war against nation and government. if 95% of us definitely dies when they will be exposed to this disease, or not, it was not important. Even if one person will definitely a crucial result, than the government shouldn’t do this. And It’s clear that this disease is dangerous than any disease else ever. THEN WHY? This was many of nation’s point of view. 

And the criticism was extremely hot on-line. 

It was then that the couple got serious attack from the public.

She had a radio programme named after her name and was DJ herself, then.

And once, at the end of the programme, she has made a big mistake.

She made a comment: “Recently candlelight assemblies have been held very largely in the country.

I read the news that the someone simply did crazy things like opening manhole, throwing away trashes on the street there. But isn’t it more important than mad cow disease import to take care of our public services, first of all?”  

And that was all. The public life of the couple, has almostly ended.

The heated-up nation, especially netizens indiscriminately attacked them, as if they were mad. Her radio programme closed and she publicly apoligized on ‘so brainless’ utterance. Ahn Jae Hwan was also apologizing for her and he even wrote in his ’mini hompy’ (a famous blog-homepage system provided by the enterprise ‘Cyworld’ in Korea now…) that they are heartily taking all the criticisms and regretting.

But the nation didn’t excused her. Except for refusing to see her on media anymore, some people even suggested to boycott the cosmetic brand, which was launched by the husband taking her as a model, and even his bar, which was opened not a long time ago, too. 

And it was yesterday that the husband’s dead body was found.

 

According to the news, she cannot say even a word now and she couldn’t have got contacted with him for a month already.

I was very shocked. Why? Is it really because of the financial obligation?

It might be. The private moneylend companies intensity is a big issue now in Korea. There’s no limit for them from government and they even do their advertisement on TV. It’s crazy.

But the biggest reason for his death is, I suppose, the mop netizens.

Netizens are the very objects to be blamed anyways for their mad behaviors for individuals, in this case.

In democratic country they simply ignored her everything. Netizens, using the priority that they shouldn’t necessarily put their real names everywhere, they have already killed these people mentally, then. 

This tragedy is much sadder because we know that we killed him, but not he himself.

To end up a person’s happy family and the life itself, we simply need some brainless journalsts whose interest is merely drawing attention to his news, and a group of people who are eager to slander someone else using anonymity, even when they’re not doing quite well, neither. 

We know how they loved each other, too. That’s why we feel so sorry…aren’t we?

 

Democracy is the first indicator of journalism in one society, and vice versa.

I’m very sorry beyond his death that our society has far more to achieve real democracy

and find out where our journalism is standing now for this tragedy, also, which is very sad for one who has just decided to specialize journalism.

 

Who is to be blamed to lead them to such a crisis? The reason at all?

It is the result on-line mob psychology, a death of one person.

+ This is not the first case of celeb death (suicide) due to calumny of netizens in Korea.

++ Besides netizens’ thoughtless critisism and behavior,

I want to mention about the thoughtless journalist who took this damn photo, too.

Can he really even try to take a photo of a wife, who has just lost her husband?

I think we should remove from him/her journalist’s title.

I’m really irritated that I should mention the rights anyway to the photo.

이 부고 기사를 쓰신 분은
안병찬 언론인권센터이사장입니다.
그 전에는 경원대 신문방송학과 교수로 후학들을 가르치셨고
그 전에는 <시사저널> 주간과 고문으로 일하셨고

그 전에는 한국일보 기자로 일하셨습니다.
우리 업계에서는 ‘베트남전 최후 종군기자’로 유명합니다.  
 

학교에서 은퇴하신 뒤에서
스스로를 ‘르포르타주 저널리스트’로 명명하시고
지금도 취재를 계속 열심히 하시고 계십니다.
요즘도 그는 관훈클럽 3층 기자실에 매일 출근하고 있습니다.
이렇게 취재한 기사로 그는 친정인 한국일보에
‘트렌드 하우스 QX’를 연재하고 계십니다.

얼마 전 안주간님을 모시고 <님은 먼 곳에>를 보고 왔습니다.
‘베트남전 최후 종군기자는 이 영화를 보고 무슨 생각을 할까’하는 궁금증 때문이었습니다.

표제 : 눈사람(雪人) 되다

 

현역 ‘르포르타주 저널리스트’인 안병찬 언론학 박사가 2008년 10월 4일 생일날 몽골-알타이산맥 최고봉인 몽하이르한울(해발 4362m) 8부 능선을 넘은 직후 조난하여 불귀의 몸이 되었다. 나이 71세.

몽골의 산악수색대가 동사한 그와 안내인 돌고르 그리고 몽골 말 한 마리를 발견하는 데는 이틀이 걸렸다.
그의 최후 모습은 극적이었다. 눈사람(雪人)이 되어 서있었다. 휘몰아치는 풍설 속에 저승사자를 뿌리치며 몽골 안내인을 구하려고 애 쓴 듯 그 어깨를 움켜잡은 채 동작을 정지하고 있었다. 표정은 마침내 아늑한 곳에 대피한 양 지극히 평온했다. 그도 죽는가하여 많은 사람이 무상을 실감했다. 그는 이중 인간이었다. 생전에 딱딱하지만 열린 사람, 도발적이지만 유연한 존재라는 평판을 듣고 싶어 했다.

그는 자기 성미대로 종말 여정조차 현장 기록으로 남겼다. 취재수첩의 말미는 두 줄의 최후 상황으로 끝난다.

“아! 몹시 졸리다……안내인은 이미 잠들다……. 그 사람 얼굴이 보인다, 여섯 사람이 주마등처럼 흐른다. 오후 6시 12분……”

이 시대 최초 유일한 르포르타주 저널리스트가 되고 싶어 했던 그는 르포르타주 심포니의 마지막 몇 분을 장중하게 연주하지 못하고 인생을 미완성으로 마감했다.

당초 그는 종족의 근원지라는 몽골-알타이산맥과 고비-알타이산맥을 시계방향으로 돌며 큰 원을 그려 보겠다고 했다. 취재수첩에 따르면 그가 악전고투하며 최고봉의 능선을 넘은 것은 생일 하루 전 하오 4시20분께. 캄캄한 밤이 되자 북방의 깊고 높은 산맥지대에 체감온도 영하 40도의 강풍설이 엄습한다. 그 속에서 그는 시각마다 한 거름 두 거름 ‘불귀의 기록’을 남기는 강기(剛氣)를 발휘한 것이다.

어린 시절, 소년 안병찬은 말을 달려 중원의 드넓은 초지를 가로지르는 올곧은 용장 한 사람을 선망했다. 중학교 한문선생님은 중국 『삼국지』의 ‘장판파’ 전투에서 상산 조자룡이 촉나라 유비의 아들 유선을 갑옷 속에 품고 호왈백만 조조 군단 한 가운데를 필마단창으로 짓무찔러 열고 나가는 대목을 구수하게 들려주었다.
조조가 경산 위에서 전황을 내려다보고 있는데 마치 무인지경을 가듯이 자기 진지를 걷어차며 달리는 대담무쌍한 자가 있다. 조조의 명령에 맹장 조홍이 말을 몰아 산을 내려가 앞질러 나가서, “야, 적장 존함이 무엇이오?”하고 묻는다. 조자룡이 청공의 검을 고쳐 잡으며 “이 사람은 상산 조자룡. 네가 감히 앞질러 막으려는가.”하고 눈을 부릅뜨자, 조홍은 급히 말머리를 돌려 뛰어 올라가 조조에게 복명하니, 조조는 무릎을 탁 치며 말한다. “만일 조자룡을 얻어 내 진중에 둘 수 있다면 한이 없겠구나!” 

안병찬은 태양이 강렬하게 빛나는 열사로 날아가고 싶어 했다. 영국 감독 데이비드 린이 찍은 <아라비아의 로렌스>, 작렬하는 사막을 눈부시게 그려낸 영화의 미학으로 그는 사막이 살아 숨 쉰다고 느꼈다. 역시 영국 감독인 안소니 밍겔라가 <잉글리시 페이션트>에서 만들어낸 영상은 풍미가 또 달랐다. 쌍엽기가 사막 위를 날아갈 때, 황혼 아래 펼쳐지는 사막은 사랑과 절망을 반사하며 끝없이 물결친다. 대조적인 두 장면은 그로 하여금 사막의 대자연에 대한 경외심을 품게 했고 동시에 그의 야성을 충동했다.

청년기에 그는 프랑스 작가 두 사람의 작품에 주목한다. 앙드레 말로의 『인간의 조건』은 1927년 상하이의 4․12 쿠데타를 무대로 한 중국 혁명의 에피소드를 소설화한 것이다. 혁명이라는 숨 가쁜 현실 속에서 인간의 조건을 발견하는 한 청년의 생생한 체험과 피 어린 기록이다. 안병찬은 행동주의 휴머니즘이 발휘하는 능동의 정신이 인간을 불안에서 건져내는 횃불이 됨을 본다.

그는 앙트완 생텍쥐페리가 행동을 통한 명상 속에서 시적 언어로 써낸  『인간의 대지』에서 ‘성실한 용기’를 읽는다. 생텍쥐페리는 사하라 사막에 불시착하여 모래밭 한 가운데 큰 대자로 누워 바람과 모래와 별을 극채색으로 그린다. 그는 칠레 우편비행을 감행하다가 안데스산맥 고산에서 조난하여 눈과 얼음, 추위와 절벽 속에 5일간 사투한 끝에 생환한 친구 앙리 기요메의 극기적인 행동이 얼마나 성실한 것인가 증언한다. 생텍쥐페리는 역경과의 싸움 속에서 삶의 의미를 찾아내고 그 극기적인 행동을 서정적 필치로 묘사해 낸 행동적 휴머니즘의 독창적인 르포르타주 작가다.

그는 두 작품을 통해 행동주의 휴머니즘에 근거하여 단순한 사실주의를 지양(止揚)하고 문학성과 역사성에 도달하려는 르포르타주 형식에 눈 떴으나, 그것은 그가 평생에 걸쳐서 붙잡으려한 사막의 신기루였다.

베트남 통일 결정전의 시기에 그는 저널리스트로서 마지막 날까지 남부 베트남 수도 사이공에 남아서 숨 가쁘고 절박한 순간순간들을 체험하며 기록했다. 그가 생환한 뒤 처음으로 르포르타주 형식을 빌어서 실험한 작품이 ‘사이공 최후의 새벽’(1975년 판)이다.

그런데, 1988년에 그가 접한 이태의 ‘남부군’은 “그 분식(粉飾) 없는 적나라하고 치열한 사실의 기록”으로 가장 역사에 근접한 르포르타주로 그에게 다가갔다. 그가 ‘사이공 최후의 새벽’을 증보하여 과거로부터 현재로 이행하는 르포르타주를 시도한 결과물은 ‘사이공 최후의 표정 컬러로 찍어라’(2005년 판)였다.

그가 무엇 때문에 몽골 말을 타고 고비사막의 드넓은 모래와 초지를 관통하여 만년설이 덮은 고비-알타이 및 몽골-알타이 산맥의 준봉과 폭풍설에 맞서는 최 고난도의 고행을 선택했을까. 그는 세 가지 주제 즉 올곧은 인간의 풍모, 사막과 바람과 별의 서사, 행동주의 휴머니즘의 르포르타주를 알타이 최후 노정에 혼입했다. 짐작컨대 그는 탐험과 고행을 통해 인간의 고향을 찾는 삶의 대장정을 실천하고자 한 것일 테다.

그와 가장 가까운 사람은 그가 ‘기획 여행’으로 행로를 잡았을 것이라는 가정에 동의한다. 인간사의 종착역 같은 것은 생각하기 싫다면서 활시위의 팽팽한 긴장을 사뭇 붙잡으려고 한 그, 그러나 최후의 선택은 자기 고집대로 가슴을 펴고 떳떳 당당하게 운명의 끝으로 걸어가는 것이었다.  

결국, 현장 체험을 거쳐 인간사의 의미를 발견하려고 그토록 애쓰던 르포르타주 저널리스트 안병찬은 바람과 별 속에 사막을 횡단하는 카라바니스트가 되어, 장장 3000리의 알타이 장정에 올라, 자기한테 남은 최후의 에너지를 불사르며 스스로에게 쿠드그라스(coup de grace), 자비로운 최후의 일격을 가한 것이다.
